Homage to Fedivision and RFF
I would like to pay homage to two amazing initiatives that have both recently turned off their lights for the last time. Without them our exciting and flourishing music community in the Fediverse would be hard to imagine. Eternal thanks to Fedivision and Radio Free Fedi. ❤️ 🙌 🙏
My own introduction to this amazing music scene came thanks to Fedivision – an annual song competition for artists in the Fediverse. I wrote an article about it at the time, how it inspired me to quit Spotify and instead focus on the incredible wealth of music made by artists on decentralised platforms without walled-gardens.
It spawned my ongoing monthly series of mixtapes, for which I have Radio Free Fedi to thank, not only for being a consistent source of new music, but also for allowing me to air a monthly radio show twice daily, every day of the month. (As of February 2025 these radio shows are hosted on Audio Interface instead.)
Radio Free Fedi was more than just a source of music. It was a beacon on how to do it right. Putting artists first. Being consent driven. Starting with community. Ending with community. It lit the torch for the ethos that we’re now taking forward.
Both of these initiatives became institutions of the Fedi music scene but sadly neither are with us any more. Their legacy will live on for as long as we are here though. It’s not lost on me that without them we wouldn’t have the emerging, growing, flourishing music scene that we’re continuing to cultivate together.
