Music updates from artists in the Fedi who distribute songs on fair platforms.

NHAM is an online music magazine for all things Fedi-music. It draws connections between indie musicians, fair distribution platforms and listeners, under a shared ethos.

We publish regular new music releases, reviews and news from the community to an audience of thousands of unique daily visitors.

As the go-to music curation platform in the Fediverse NHAM also hosts music videos, has a radio channel and contains gig listings for both real life and online performances.

We aim to help develop and nurture the ecosystem which envelopes all of the fair platforms that currently support indie artists in The Fediverse, and in turn enhance discovery, distribution, attribution, fair artist payment, consent and trust. Interoperability and community are key to making this work.

The Space Between the Sea and the Sky

Serialising the album Pretentious Incongruity by Key 13 (@keefmarshall)

Pretentious Incongruity: 2020-2024 is a retrospective compilation looking back at some key milestones in the first five years of Key 13 as a recording identity.

Track 5

Another candidate for best Key 13 track? Listening to this collection together, there’s clearly some lingering influence from Furloughed, but I think this one is much better put together. When creating this I deliberately set myself two goals:

  1. don’t use any chords on the same instrument (single notes only, or octaves) and
  2. don’t consciously follow any specific scale or pattern when putting the note sequences together.

The result is a somewhat random sequence of notes, on top of which I added bass and suspended arpeggios to help give it structure. The guitar-like bass patch is one I used a while before, on Invertebration (that later became As the Sun Sets Over the Water). I used Izotope’s Vinyl plugin to give the lead electric piano a slightly warbling tone, plus an erratic delay preset.

I already remastered this for the Sea · Sky · Clouds EP but I now hate that mastering, far too bright and too loud, so this one went back to the original mix. I tweaked a little bit, not much, but had to comp several renders of the bubbling synth instrument to get it to sound close to the original.

Influences: Boards of Canada is where I was aiming – didn’t get close, but there you go.
