I love ambient music for its ability to take you to new worlds and this is true of “Beneath the Wall of Dreams” by Flock of Nazguls. I imagine a large cave with fractured, mirrored walls reflecting sunlight percolating in through holes in the cave roof. A gentle rhythm echoes around the walls as you walk along barefoot on a sandy floor. It may not be what the composer intended of course and your experience will be different.
Reverb and echo laden, shimmering sounds are in abundance making a dreamy ambient landscape. But then, as we progress, we start to get a discordant feel. The wall of dreams becomes a little unsettling – rather like many dreams. The reflections become less inviting and the journey becomes more concerning. We never loose the original theme, however, and this is what the track hangs on and keeps it from wandering too far away and gives the track purpose.
In the end the dream fades out and we return to reality. Overall an enjoyable listen for those of you who like ambient music. Take a few moments to escape the world.
