Below the Apex of the Sky is that latest album by Time Rival (aka Michael Southard). The six tracks are a landscape of field recordings and electro-acoustic sounds. From the first track, Handspan, through Gneiss, where you get to hear some lovely bird recordings, all the way to Service Interruption, you are immersed in an ambient world that you wished existed in reality.
I became fully immersed in each track – headphones recommended – and I felt myself drifting into another world, a constructed one, yes, but one which feels natural and freeing. I can’t remember spending such a relaxing 40+ minutes listening to music in a long while.
I had to play it again – and you know I found new sounds buried in the mix – it’s not a play once and forget album, you really have to listen and the more you listen you get to appreciate the care that goes into each sound selection and it’s placement in the mix.
